Market Introduction
The scrubber system market in Europe is sub-segmented into France, Germany, Russia, Italy, the UK, and the Rest of Europe. Compared with the Nordic and Eastern European countries, western European countries are more developed and technologically advanced. EU is increasingly stringent policies to observe the numerous constituents of air which is anticipated to propel the growth of the scrubber system market. Also, despite the EU proposals, all member states of the IMO again approved scrubbing system technology as an accepted compliance method. According to European exports, Germany is one of the essential countries for deploying marine scrubbers in long voyage vessels. Furthermore, rising government investments & funding to strengthen the national security by deploying advanced shipping line is leading to the development of advanced vessels encouraging the industry growth. These developing economies and increasing investments toward the shipping and trade industry development is a significant factor driving the market growth. Increasing adoption of scrubber systems by the industries to save labor costs on clean-up methods and time can also fuel the demand for scrubber systems in the region as they enhance revenue generation by reducing the time and labor required to clean exhaust systems.
Countries in Europe, especially France and Russia, are highly affected due to the COVID-19 outbreak. In Europe, owing to the outbreak, several countries have suffered an economic hit due to the decline in business activities across the marine, oil & gas, and manufacturing sectors in the first quarter of 2020. Many of the member states implemented drastic measures on imports and exports and shipment of goods, as well as partially closed their borders, which hindered the demand for scrubber systems in Europe. Russia is a one of the leading natural gasses producing countries in the global market and is severely affected by the pandemic due to nationwide lockdown, disrupted oil & gas supply chain, and reduced demand for oil and gas related products. Similar trend has been observed in other oil and gas producing European countries. The FY 2020 was supposed to be the great year for the marine scrubber market as IMO (International Maritime Organization’s) introduced new regulation to control the pollution at aquatic environment. This was expected to increase the demand for advanced scrubbers significantly. However, the COVID-19 pandemic delayed the implementation and the marine industry has already faced decline in revenues. Due to the pandemic, a revision of the 2015 Guidelines for Exhaust Gas Cleaning System has been stalled and scheduled for November 2021. However, the market is gaining momentum with the increasing order and stabilization in the shipping industry. New regulations creating demand for scrubbers to maintain healthy environment would create lucrative opportunities for the Europe scrubber systems market in the coming years.

Market Overview and Dynamics
The Europe scrubber systems market is expected to grow from US$ 476.01 million in 2021 to US$ 1,041.44 million by 2028; it is estimated to grow at a CAGR of 11.8% from 2021 to 2028. The rising application of sulfur dioxide (SOx) removal scrubber technology in the marine industry has gained significant traction in recent years. It is expected to propel the growth of the market in the coming years. The SOx removal scrubber technology offers three different scrubber technology variants based on the vessel's operating profile, such as open-loop scrubber technology, closed-loop scrubber technology, and hybrid scrubber technology. The open-loop scrubber technology uses seawater to scrub the exhaust gas. It discharges the sulfuric acid content water back into the sea as the natural alkalinity of seawater neutralizes the acid. Further, the close loop scrubber technology uses either seawater or freshwater with an alkaline additive to capture sulfur from the exhaust gas. The hybrid scrubber technology combines both open-loop and closed-loop modes – depending on the water local water discharge regulations, the vessel operators can use either mode. The SOx scrubber technology is becoming popular, and several scrubber system manufacturers have started to fit this technology in marines and ships. For instance, Valmet has developed the SOx scrubber system and began its retrofit in ships. Similarly, ALFA LAVAL has designed a PureSOx scrubber and installed over hundred SOx scrubber systems in the marine industry. Hence, the growing application of SOx removal scrubber technology in the maritime industry is anticipated to trend in the coming years, thereby driving the Europe market growth.
